A little known fact, although having slowly gained attention over the last ten years, is that Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to spot the elusive blue whale. The world’s largest living mammal can be seen from the Southern and Eastern coasts during two seasons.
The best place to see the blue whale is the Dondra Point, which is along its migration route and can be easily accessed via Mirissa. The peak season here is between December and April. A three-hour journey can take you very close to the blue whale, and you will be also be able to see the excitable spinner and bottle-nosed dolphins. On the Eastern coast, just off Trincomlaee it’s possible to see whales between July and September.
