Getting Around Sri Lanka
Exploring Sri Lanka is convenient and efficient, thanks to a variety of transportation options. Whether you choose to travel by road, rail, or air, getting from one place to another is quick and hassle-free due to the island’s compact size.
Bus Travel
Buses are the most common mode of transport for both locals and visitors. They operate frequently and offer an affordable way to travel across cities and towns. If you’re looking to travel long distances, head to the Pettah Central Bus Station, where buses connect to nearly every part of the country. Within Colombo, an extensive bus network allows you to reach different areas easily. Since bus routes cover multiple destinations, they provide an excellent way to explore the island.
Train Journeys
Sri Lanka boasts a well-connected railway system that links major cities and tourist destinations, such as Kandy, Anuradhapura, Galle, Nuwara Eliya, Trincomalee, Kurunegala, and Batticaloa. Separate railway lines serve the southern coastal regions, making it easy to travel along the stunning coastline.
Trains have three classes—First, Second, and Third Class, with ticket prices varying based on your preferred level of comfort. First and Second Class tickets can be reserved in advance through Sri Lanka Railways, and bookings can be made at the Colombo Fort Railway Station or online. Passengers should arrive at least 30–60 minutes before departure to locate their platform and seating.
Your train ticket will be checked at three points:
- At the platform entrance
- During the journey by the ticket inspector
- At the exit gate upon arrival

Tuk-Tuks (Three-Wheelers)
For a more adventurous and flexible way to explore the city, Tuk-Tuks are an excellent choice. These three-wheelers are commonly used for short-distance travel and offer an exciting way to experience local life. Many Tuk-Tuks in cities are metered, with fares typically ranging from Rs. 100–120 per kilometer. However, for non-metered rides, it’s advisable to negotiate the fare beforehand and use navigation apps like Google Maps to ensure you take the most direct route. If there is a language barrier, asking a local for assistance can be helpful.
Private Vehicles and Ride-Sharing Services
If you hold an international driving permit, you can rent a car to explore the island at your own pace. Alternatively, you can use ride-hailing services such as Uber and PickMe, which offer both intra-city and inter-city travel. These apps provide an efficient and safe way to get around Colombo and other towns, with fares varying based on demand and travel distance.
Domestic Air Travel
For those who want to save time and avoid road traffic, domestic flights are a great option. Several local airlines offer air transfers across the country, providing stunning aerial views during the journey. The primary domestic airport, Ratmalana Airport, is located just 15 km from Colombo, along Galle Road.
Flights are available to destinations such as Jaffna, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ampara, and Minneriya, with travel times ranging from 15 to 45 minutes. Tickets can be booked online through the respective airline websites or by contacting their reservation offices.
