The journey to Bentota is quite effortless due to the town being greatly accessible by multiple modes of transport. Most typical mode being by road, the transit is a simple 1.5 – 2 hour drive from Colombo via the southern expressway. Although, visitors who wish to enjoy the spectacular Sri Lankan landscape en route to the destination often pick the stunning and scenic coastal train ride from Colombo city. Bentota is also accessible by air due to it’s very own local river airport. Domestic flights are also boarded from Bandaranaike International airport to nearby airstrips. Apart from the beautiful lagoon, the town also has a number of other destinations worthwhile visiting for nature loving travelers. Located just about 10 km away from Bentota lies the lush and echanting Brief Garden. The garden was a work of passion designed by the late landscape architect Bewis Bawa, and has been open for public viewing since the 1970s. The 20 acre garden is home to over 106 different exotic plant species. Also known for the flawless antique sculptures and enigmatic hidden pathways, the Brief gardens are too much of a treasure to miss. Another key attraction based on nature and wildlife is the Kosgoda turtle care centre. The Sri Lankan waters are home to a vast number of fascinating sea-life which include sea turtles. 5 out of the total 7 species of sea turtles inhabit the shores of Sri Lanka and all of them are considered endangered wildlife. The Kosgoda turtle care centre is one of 18 turtle hatcheries along the island’s coast and the centre provides an immaculate oppurtunity to learn and witness the incredible efforts taken by local wildlife experts to conserve and protect sea turtles.
Like most other famous landmarks around the island, Bentota too is part of the nation’s rich history. The town has a fair number of historical sites shrouded with history, like ancient temples. The Kande Viharaya Temple is a major buddhist temple recognized by the government as an archealogical site in Sri Lanka. Biult on top of a hill (hence it’s name), the majestic temple is located in Aluthgama, a town located just a kilometer away from Bentota. The fascinating monuments inside the temple are sacred and incredibly old. The Bodhi tree of the temple, which is a large religiously venerated fig tree, is believed to be over 300 years old. The temple premise is also host to one of the tallest sitting statues of Lord Buddha in the world with a remarkable height of 48.8m (160ft). Bentota is also home to Galapatha Raja Maha Viharaya, another ancient temple with a fascinating history. The temple is about 4 km away from the town and lies on the banks of the Bentota river. Some treasured relics of the temple include many historic inscriptions, unique artifacts, and intriguing stone carvings which date back to the Kandyan era. One of many rare archaeological finds at the temple is the ‘Galperanaya’, an ancient stone water filter made from porous stone that absorbs water, gradually releasing it.
